The Cuff Bracelet: Why I Made It, and Why You’ll Love It
I had a momentous itch to push my creative limit and a desire to invent a super savvy design from absolute silversmithing scratch. The inspiration struck when I was 6 months postpartum - possibly deriving from a worry of losing my identity and momentum as an artist when a new routine was setting in. This overwhelming desire ignited my spark as a designer (and mother) and forced me outside of my comfort zone to shake up my day to day.
Queue the lab goggles. Zero components existed for this design as I had to create each of them. Initiated as a molten level puddle of sterling silver from my “don’t throw even a millimeter of sterling silver wire away” scraps within a crucible being torched in flames, followed by an enduring list of tasks I’ll briefly list as : roll melted blob into equal gauge sheets via rolling mill, size, saw, anneal, repeat, roll hollow tubes for compatible hinge pieces with pin, solder the components together in strategic order - all while not melting any of it into another molten state. Simple, right?
My current casual designs take anywhere from a honed 10-30 minutes each to produce via years of repetition, dexterity and muscle memory. This was surely an out-of-the-ordinary intention to invite a slower, intensely involved process. Envisioning how I can create a piece that is not only beautiful, functional, wearable, conversational, unique - it also had to earn the title as a timeless walking piece of art. Clocking about 30 hours each to come to fruition- these modern cuffs are a true labor of love.
The reality is that jewelry needs to be fun and feel great to wear for that dose of confidence. Yes, I designed this cuff for the cool factor, but functionality was just as much of a priority. You will feel empowered and strong wearing this metal of armor bare-wristed or over a chic slender long sleeve. (Look how Carrie Coon is rocking one, and also dramatically 3!)
From Cardstock to Cuff: The Design Process
The prototype was curated with sturdy cardstock and handy dandy painters tape I had laying on my bench - materials that I could manipulate and adjust with ease until it was just right. Albeit, a bit rogue and DIY, but playing around is usually where every great idea manifests. Surely, I didn’t want a complicated, uncomfortable clasp that pinched or dug into your wrist. I wanted something sleek, secure, and easy to put on yourself. Enter the hinged clasp closure, which securely snaps into place with just enough tension; it feels solid without being tight. Putting it on is a dose of joy and actually quite satisfactory.
The flat top keeps the cuff from spinning, giving the design an opportunity for comfort (seriously - move, bend, twirl your wrist around with ease!) and even write those emails. You will always appreciate this walking piece of art for all to admire. I haven’t been fond of a traditional bangle situation - usually too large, sloppy, loud and spins without a face to appreciate, and perhaps, fly off within a moment of excitement!
After honing in on the oblong hugging fit and function, I scouted for stones that would grace the modernly flat topped surface area. The stones needed to offer a presence, silhouette, and deep meaning to each individual cuff to be more than just an accessory.
The Stones: A Little Extra Magic
All of the stones were hand-picked considering the beauty in shape, proportion, and intentional properties. Here's why I chose each one:
Pyrite bangle — Commonly known as "Fool's Gold," pyrite is a powerful stone of strength and protection. The metallic sheen and gold color gives it an air of abundance and trust. Said to be an excellent energy booster and intellect empowering crystal. So, when you wear it, you’re not just adding a touch of glam—you’re also opening the door for good luck in life. A literal powerhouse of a stone joining form and function.
Green Turquoise - One of my favorite variations of turquoise, it brings out balance and healing, and is in line with its protective properties. The stone is also associated with communication, wisdom, and a popular choice to create space for calmness and creativity.
Blue Turquoise – This rectangular-cut Blue Turquoise radiates calm and clarity with its vivid blue hue, reminiscent of clear skies. Known for its healing properties, the unique emerald shape adds a modern touch to the cuff. It promotes mental clarity and open communication, making it a perfect choice for those seeking to express themselves. The lively blue is as striking as it is powerful.
Turquoise – The Teardrop-shaped Turquoise adds a graceful, fluid element to the design. Symbolizing transformation and emotional release, this shape feels organic and connected to life’s rhythms. Mauve Porcelain Jasper – With its delicate shades of mauve, the purple hued Mauve Porcelain Jasper is a calming stone known for its nurturing qualities. Its soft tones harmonize beautifully with the vibrant turquoise, offering grounding support and a sense of tranquility.
