Earth Day, Every Day

Every April, Earth Day rolls around and reminds us to check in—with our habits, our intentions, and our impact. But for me, Earth Day isn’t just a moment. It’s a mindset. As a one-woman business, sustainability isn’t just part of my brand story—it’s built into every decision I make.

How I Keep Sustainability at the Heart of the Rach B

For the past 18 years, I've been using these lovely tin boxes for my jewelry packaging. They have a clear window so you can see the piece inside, but honestly, they’re more than just functional—they're keepsakes. They really protect your jewelry from tarnish, tangles, and damage while storing or traveling, but what I love most is that they promote a culture of care. They’re just too pretty to toss! I’ve heard so many people say they use them to display their jewelry in a drawer or shelf and even organize their miscellaneous drawer — and that makes me so happy. It means my packaging keeps on giving long after you’ve unboxed your jewelry.

The real deal with smart design is that it’s not just about looking good; it’s also about being resourceful. In nearly two decades, I’ve never purchased a single piece of shipping padding. All the bubble wrap and foam that protects your orders comes from my own life—repurposed from appliances, packages, and boxes I receive. I take the time to cut and repurpose every piece, even my branded tissue paper gets measured and quartered. Every little detail is done with care!

Because I make almost everything in-house, there’s minimal waste. I melt down metal scraps, repurpose vintage pieces for one-of-kind designs, and lean into designs that maximize material efficiency. It’s not just eco-conscious—it’s economical. But more importantly, it reflects my belief that good design and good ethics can (and should) coexist.

What I Do at Home (That You Can Too!)

Over time, I’ve built a quiet but committed system for sustainability. This includes composting, recycling properly, incorporating solar energy, and reconsidering how I dispose of or repurpose old textiles. Even t-shirts and towels can be transformed into cleaning rags or added to a donation bag for textile recycling. While it may not be perfect, it is a persistent effort.

I’ve also made mindful swaps at home, like using biodegradable trash bags and sandwich baggies from HoldOn. It's a small change that makes a big difference in keeping plastic out of landfills.

For composting, I love WasteNot Compost. They pick up right from my doorstep and return nutrient-rich soil twice a year. It’s a full-circle kind of magic. I’ve also learned more about proper recycling through companies like TerraCycle, which accepts items you never knew could be recycled—and keeps them out of oceans and landfills.

When it comes to textile waste, Retold Recycling helps me send off unwearable clothing for proper recycling. And Suay gives old garments new life through beautiful upcycling. It’s a whole new relationship with our things—one that honors them instead of discarding them.

I’m still learning—always. The more we know, the more we grow. Whether it’s rinsing recyclables, skipping the next-day shipping, or choosing to shop small and intentional, every mindful action ripples outward.

So this Earth Day, I invite you to look around your life and your routines. What small shifts can you make that will add up over time? How can your choices reflect your values?

Because sustainability doesn’t have to be loud or flashy—it just has to be real. Thoughtful. Ongoing.

Thank you for supporting a business that cares deeply, not just about the jewelry you wear, but the world we live in. If you’re curious about any of the sustainable practices I mentioned or want to start building a more conscious lifestyle, explore the resources above—I promise they’re worth it.

🌎 With love, intention, and a little sparkle. xx, Rachel
